Closing Slubird Vintage

After a lot of reflection on the subject, I've decided to close my vintage shop.

I have loved buying, photographing, listing, and finding amazing new owners for all the pieces I have encountered, but with the overwhelming success of Branchbound with Heartsy and the Chicago Cultural Center, as well as my day job's long hours, I can't devote the time to my vintage shop anymore when I'm not making the sales I am at Branchbound. It has taken top priority in my life for now. I still love vintage and will always have a place in my heart for it, but I think the past few months it has become more of a chore than an interest for me. I can always open another shop some day (who knows, maybe I'll list the occasional item at Branchbound?), but right now my focus needs to be on my other shop. I also plan on selling some of my unlisted items on consignment with Rachel of MouseVox Vintage, who is kind enough to work with me while I make this transition.

The part I'm sure you'll be happy about is I'm having a store closing sale through June 12th. Everything is already half off, so grab whatever you've been eying cos soon it will be gone.

Thank you for all the support you've given me and my vintage shop! I would have never have lasted this long without you all giving me the drive to continue.

Saturday and Sunday I sold my Branchbound line at Vintage Heaven Chicago. These photos are from Saturday at the start of the first day. Michael so nicely took my outfit photo- I needed to pick a dress that had at least one pocket and this one did indeed have one pocket. I've seen this dress in blue, I'm tempted to pick it up, too. I also donned a pair of my bird earrings, as you can see I made them in many more colors...

Saturday it was sunny and mild, so Michael and I went downtown for a bit of shopping. I'm fighting off a cold, but was determined to enjoy the nice weather this weekend. I wore this dress in Nashville but neglected to snap a picture. I really love the cut and pattern, and I definitely need more white dresses in my wardrobe.

My last day in Nashville the sun finally came out, and Rachel and I had been really bad about taking outfit photos so we wanted to find a good spot. Rachel thought we'd stop by a mill that was being converted into stores, and upstairs it was empty with this amazing skylight. As you can tell, these images are pretty much perfect.

I am excited to be wearing this dress from Karen I got in late October, and since I wasn't partial to it with a sweater I've been waiting for it to warm up so I could wear it. I think Karen was actually wearing one of my headbands at the same time I was wearing this dress! ♥

Also, let me tell you about this ring. I had this exact ring for about a year before I lost a stone (green, my fave) a few weeks ago. I went to the Nashville Flea Market and a vendor had this ring so I bought a new one! Hooray! Also, you can see my sweet manicure.

I think the trend I'm most eager to try this summer is maxi dresses. While this style is aimed towards the taller ladies, I think us petite ladies can rock them, too! At 5'2" I can look like a column in my Hasbeens and a solid colored maxi. I also must say, as a curvy lady with a pixie cut it's a lot easier to embrace the 70s comeback that's emerging, too!

Anyway, back to maxis. These all come from stylish Euro-site ASOS, and through today a lot of their brand of Spring styles is 20% off. They also have free shipping and returns! All these photos were taken by Rachel from MouseVox Vintage on my visit to Nashville! This is what I wore on Sunday to a ladies brunch at Margot. It was delicious and very fun. I met Quincy of Q's Daydream and Alyson of Alyson Is Neat as well as many of Rachel's friends. I'll have more pictures of that later! I'm going to spread out the posts so as not to flood you.

The evening before, Rachel and I popped into the Tennessee Antique Mall after getting rained out of the Flea Market and I found this beautiful collar. I was browsing some online the other day, and this one was gorgeous- and affordable! I thought it would make the perfect finishing touch on my brunch outfit and I was very pleased.

It took 3 hours to get it the right shade, but I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I love it. My eyes and lips really pop now and it's the perfect shade for Spring and Summer. I'm excited to see how it looks with all my vintage summer dresses, I'm used to seeing them worn with my long, red hair. Can you believe how much my hair has changed in the past year? I wonder what that means... Regardless, I plan on sticking with the blond for a while.

Rabbit rabbit! It's March first, a new month and today I had a new attitude. I promised myself I'd be optimistic and productive all day and so far I have! I woke up to the sun shining. As soon as I got up I did my taxes, got the ball rolling on beginning therapy, shot shop photos, went to the bank and store, and I'm about to make chicken salad and list. I didn't feel mopey or complain all day.

I'm excited for March. I'm taking care of myself inside and out all month. My plans for the next 31 days include:

• begin sessions with a therapist
• treat myself to a facial and a Swedish massage
• cook for myself and Michael more
• weather permitting, start running
• get my hair professionally dyed blonde
• treat myself to my first professional mani/pedi
• go to Nashville March 25-28 (!!!)

Yes, you heard right, I'll be in Nashville. I've been planning for the last month of so with Rachel. If you want to meet up, or can suggest things for me to check out while I'm there, please do!

I know, it's been approximately 850 years since I've done an outfit post. I've taken photos and never uploaded them. These would fall into the same pile except I forced myself to upload them.

Why? Well, many reasons. First of all, winter has me in a rut. I want to be comfortable so badly. I wear a sort of uniform most days, and I'm just bulked out in knits and layers. I'm too exhausted in the morning to take a photo, and I manage to dress even worse on my days off. What's the point if I don't leave the house?

Also, a few weeks ago, my boyfriend's sister attempted to dye my hair blonde. Suffice it to say, this didn't pan out (I'm telling my stylist, when I go back with my tail between my legs, that "we couldn't get the right blonde"). Oh well, blonde is tricky and I had two years' worth of red dye in my hair, it was going to be a pain in the ass. I dyed it golden brown, cried a lot, and miss my red hair. I feel old and ugly. I've just been feeling gross in general because winter drains me of my energy, due in part to hiking through the post-blizzard snow banks and working extra overtime at work. I've not been eating the healthiest and feel overweight. Basically, I feel ugly, old, and fat. So dressing well isn't really up there on my list of priorities right now.

Anyway, back to this outfit. Saturday the sun was shining, the snow on the ground was all gone, and even though it was chilly and I didn't have anywhere too special to go I thought I should pull myself together a little bit. I'm not sure about this dress, high neck styles aren't the best for me, but I wore the top 2 buttons unbuttoned the rest of the day and it looked fine. It was originally for the shop but when I saw how well it fit, Michael and I agreed it should stay in my closet for the time being. I adore the matching belt! I also sported this headband I got last winter in a trade with Ashli and I love the pop of colour it gives my outfit. I love wearing headbands with a pixie cut, too.

Michael and I left late in the day to Shangri-La Vintage located in Roscoe Village. It's small, but there's a decent amount of clothing there. Very well organized and very fairly priced. The man who runs it even puts measurements and flaws on the tag for you! I got a cute 60s sundress and Michael scored a vest, tie, and four vintage Playboy Magazines (two were $4 each, the other two only $2 each cos they were missing the centerfolds!). We wandered around a bit, had dinner at the Pick Me Up Cafe and went home to watch a film.

Snowglobe

I'm sure you've heard of the blizzard that started on Tuesday night. Approximately 100,000,000 people were affected, myself included. Michael met me at work around 5 on Tuesday (we closed early, he had a guitar delivered to my store). Trying to hail a cab was difficult, as the first cabbie we found wouldn't go to Logan Square, but we got one. Trying to hail one the wind was 50-60 mph and almost knocked me down, and I couldn't see because I had ice flakes going into my eyes. After crawling up the Kennedy expressway we made it home safe.

However, my third floor apartment's windows were facing opposite the wind, and I was sure they would blow out. Not to mention there is a bare tree right outside the windows that were scraping and smacking against the glass, making it sound like there would be a zombie invasion. My roommate and I taped cardboard to the windows in case they broke and it looked (and still does) like this:

I was really upset at this point because as far as I knew I had to work on Wednesday and everyone I knew was off. In the middle of the night I heard the wind howling and the tree scraping the window and I was scared a window would blow out while I was at work and nobody would be home and Seymour would get hurt...

Yesterday I awoke to sun. There was still wind but it wasn't howling, and it was blowing the snow that was falling around. It seriously looked like a snow globe. The building I work in said stores didn't have to open if they didn't want to, and my boss said it was okay if I didn't open. I was so relieved! People I knew said the snow was up to their waists when they went outside.

I tried finding the beauty in it, after all I might never see so much snow again and it was so fresh. Here are some photos I snapped, makes the area around my home look like little toys.

I'm thankful that my power didn't go out, nobody I knew was hurt, and even though I feel kind of sick today I survived the blizzard of 2011!

Saturday Michael and I did a bit of shopping down town. I also went shopping Friday, which is when I picked up this dress! It's so comfy and I've been looking for a black and floral print dress. I've also really been drawn to pinks and oranges lately.

I was off early Friday, as well as both days this weekend, so I painted my nails. This colour is "Commander in Chic" from Sally Henson. It's a really nice shade, goes with everything. I also want to find more clothing in this colour- looks so nice with my skin tone. That's something I've really been paying attention to since I've become a redhead, how colours look with my hair and skin colour. As a pale brunette I figured, and was somewhat right, in thinking I matched everything!

I am ever-approaching 100 sales at Branchbound! I added a new banner, take a look. I have a ton of new stuff to photograph, and I've resumed doing custom orders again. I have a lot of new ideas in the works, too- can't wait to share with all of you.

Retrospecticus: 2010

It's the last day of 2010! How this year flew by; seems like just yesterday I was in Lawrence, Kansas preparing for my NYE dinner party with Michael. This year has brought me lots of wealth in many ways than one; I received a promotion and raise at my day job, my Etsy stores have been a success, I've started selling my jewelry and vintage at pop-up shops. I've become more confident as a sales person and as a jewelry artist. And perhaps the best event of 2010 is that Michael, the love of my life, moved to Chicago!

As most do at this time of year I am reflecting on goals I made for myself for this year. From the blog, let's revisit:

Resolutions and Goals for 2010

• Get up 15 minutes earlier every day (outfit photo + get together lunch + not have to run to the bus)

I'm not getting up earlier, but cutting my hair has also cut down my morning routine!

• Take outfit photos way more often (see previous)
• Update blog at least every other day

Eep. Maybe this is why I'm not late to work as much? I'll try harder next year!

• Get a lot more stock for both my etsy stores

Yes! I also remember telling Michael I'd like to hit 100 sales in my vintage shop before my birthday, which I also did. :)

• Save money so I can go to L.A. in March and Boston/Salem in September or October with Michael

Yeah, neither of those happened. But I *did* do to Madison in Febuary, a bonus trip to Lawrence in July, and New York City in May so I did get out of the state!

• Make solid, fashionable attempt to wear pants more often

I am wearing pants more often! I just never photograph it. ;)

• Only buy shoes that are durable, comfortable, and stylish

Except for a stupid purchase here and there (it's hard to justify spending more than $20 on novelty heels!) I've been pretty good about this.

• Get rid of even more stuff

I got rid of A LOT when I moved...of course now I accumulated some more. Ha.

• Buy a better sewing machine and learn how to sew (this is not likely, but I'm still putting it on here)

I did NOT buy a new sewing machine, however I DID learn to sew! Or at least hem. Thanks to Alma and her sewing machine. :)

Goals for 2011? Let's see:

• Travel! Travel travel travel. I started tearing up on the bus to work this morning, frustrated at how badly I need to leave Chicago for a little while. Ugh.

• Sew my first garment from scratch.

• Try to relax, be less insecure about myself and my relationships, and remember that I am loved.

• Get my driver's license, or at least renew my learner's permit.

• Spend less money on clothes and more on experiences and pampering myself (massage, anyone?)

• Maybe get another kitty friend for Seymour!

Sunday Michael and I went to go see the Nutcracker at the Auditorium Theater, this is what I wore. I also wore this dress last weekend to Michael's holiday party. I've been searching for a green cocktail dress for Christmastime for YEARS and I was searching Etsy about a month ago, willing to shell out up to $70 or so, but everything was too small, too large, had a pattern on it, SOMETHING. Finally I see a green dress in my size*, the perfect length, nipped waist, etc. for TEN BUCKS. It was fantastic! There is some wear to the dress; a few of the copper beads at the bust are missing and there's a hole here and there but it's nothing very noticeable. It even has a crinoline in the skirt!

*the bust was actually a bit big but my friend Alma helped me take it in.

I've also noticed that since I cut my hair, while I can no longer wear my vintage hats (they overwhelm my tiny head!) I look so much better with headbands! I saw this one at UO last Spring and wanted to die, it looked like a weird little 20s hat. It was $24, ugh. But I waited and waited and FINALLY it went down to $6! It's the perfect little bit of sparkle for this time of year.

Anyway, enough of my bargain hunting. We headed off to the theater, got there pretty early. Michael checked in on Four Square and it said he got a free hot chocolate for checking in there! What! So I joined For Square just to get a free hot chocolate...haha. Well it was GOOD hot chocolate. We get inside, drinking our hot chocolate in the lobby, waiting for the upstairs to open. There's a choir (that sings at the end of the first act) warming up and singing Christmas Carols. We then get to our seats, which were box seats! We had this gorgeous plush chairs and we could see all of the theater from our seats. It was seriously like we were royalty.

The show itself was lovely; the acoustics are so good in that theater I could hear the dancers' feet on the stage! I get so emotional waiting the ballet, especially the Nutcracker. I danced for 7 years 9 months out of the year so it was a giant chunk of my childhood. The Nutcracker was always my favourite, I would watch various versions every year around Christmastime and on Christmas Eve I would ALWAYS wear my ballet shoes, hehe.

Michael and I might be coming back in February for Swan Lake *and* Merry Widow! I can't wait!

Ballet Dresses

On Sunday Michael and I will be attending the Joffrey Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker at the Auditorium Theater! The Auditorium Theater is one of the most beautiful buildings in Chicago, built in 1889, with gorgeous Art Nouveau interior and amazing acoustics. Michael and I saw Cinderella, also from the Joffrey Ballet, there in February. I've also seen a few concerts there. If you are ever in Chicago try to get a tour of it!

Of course, the hardest thing is figuring out what to wear! It's easy in the summer, as most cute dresses are sleeveless and don't require any further layering, but winter is a bit more difficult. I'm still not sure what I'll be wearing yet but I'm doing a bit of fantasy shopping...

What a month December is shaping out to be! I've been so unbelievably stressed out; being a manager of a frame shop and running two Etsy shops is not easy during the holiday season! Debut of my brand new dress! I've been looking for a velvet mod long-sleeve dress for a while, preferably one with a neckline that wasn't too high, and this fit the bill quite nicely. I was eying it for weeks and then a few days ago finally decided this was the one and was thrilled to receive it so quickly! I think I'll be wearing this on Christmas, too. I highly recommend kittenteeth's shop, she has some really cute things and great prices, and she was very friendly. Like I said, she shipped this very quickly, too.

It was nice out today and I had some errands to run so Michael and I wandered around the loop. A lot of the Christmas decor was up. This is Michael's first Christmas in Chicago so I want him to have the full experience! We're seeing the Nutcracker in a few weeks, and next week we're going to dine at the Walnut room in Macy's (I've never done that, either!) and Christkindlmarket, the German marketplace with a giant Christmas tree in Daley Plaza.

My usual photo spot was blocked by all of my Vintage Heaven bins (I did very well, by the way!) but I still wanted to snap a pic...so I figured I'd give you a different view of my apartment! Anyway, we've been having a bit of everything in Chicago so far this month, but most of this week was nice and warm. I had gotten this blouse the night before. I usually don't care for orange but I like the oranges in the Tucker collection for Target and I must admit that shade looks great with my hair and skin colour. I also really love this jumper I got from YeYe, it goes so well with my hair and looks oh-so-mod. This is already the second time I've worn it!

Rule of thumb, of course, is to invest in classic pieces that can be worn season after season. Dracula's Pajama Party

Yipee, my Halloween post is only a day late! Forgive the quality of these pictures but they were taken at my Halloween party held Saturday night. I went as a Snow Queen, but a lot of people thought I was Tilda Swinton/the White Witch. Same thing, I suppose. I based the dress off of a Cecil Beaton photograph of his sister as a shooting star (my original idea) and styled it very John R. O'Neil a la Wizard Of Oz (see my jaunty crown?).

There is still some glitter in my hair and the whole costume left glitter all over my apartment. I expect my life to sparkle for the next few months.

Costumes I did not get photos of include AstroTurf, a cat lady, George Michael (from Arrested Development), and Death (from The Sandman). Highlights included starting a conga line to "Jumping The Line," watching Sleepy Hollow and The Shining on mute, all of us turning The Shining off mute at the end to watch it, lots of hugging and dancing and punch consumption. I gotta say, dancing with that staff was pretty sweet.

I notice in Autumn and Winter I don't wear as many thrifted goods as I do in Spring and Summer. I guess since I'm colder I need pieces that have as little wear as possible. Of course I have a vintage coat or two, a few pairs of vintage boots, some cardigans and some wool skirts, but dresses such as this one are a little harder to find that aren't too big for my petite stature. It's kind of hard to hem a sweater dress! I got these boots last week with half of my Vintage Heaven profits (the rest went into savings, like a good girl). Everyone was giving me crap for buying a pair of $110 boots, but I own these boots in grey and I've worn them all last Winter, and I don't own any other boots in this cognac colour. I love these, they go with everything; skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings. I also re-bought this dress last night. See, Thursday I had a really bad day and after work I picked up this dress at H&M...and on the way home I accidentally left it on the train. On the way home, I thought, well I'm done. But this dress was inexpensive and cozy and it looks good with my hair so I luckily could afford to buy it twice. I'm glad I did.

Anyway, enough about my outfit. Today, I made Michael and I some French toast and then we took the bus to Fantasy Costumes, a gigantic costume shop in Chicago. We needed to find Michael a costume for my Halloween party next weekend. Luckily we got something for him, and at the Dollar store across the street I found the perfect adjustment for my costume. We then went to Target and Joann to get some other odds and ends, and then I made dinner. We watched some Quantum Leap and here I am, updating while the boy is doing his ablutions. Next up, Boardwalk Empire! Has anyone else seen that show? Anyone else watching regularly? I'm mourning the ending of Mad Men, but it's good to have another great period drama to watch Sunday night.

And finally, on the bus I downloaded a Retro Camera app for my android and I love it! Here's some snaps from throughout my day, I'm surprised at the quality! Maybe I can update my blog more, haha.

Fresh from the salon, here's my new pixie cut! I'm wearing it "curly" here, I'll probably wear it straight most of the time cos it'll be a lot faster, but I couldn't be happier with it. I had a pixie before, about 4 years ago, but it looks so different red! As my stylist was cutting it, before she texturized it, I said "I look like a red Hailey Mills!" And then afterward, "last time I looked like Mandy Slade, and now I look like Brian Slade!" I already got a Carey Mulligan reference (for the record, so flattered). What do you think?

Stressed, Anxious and Busy

Once again, readers, I apologize for my absence. I have a bunch of entries in-the-works but I haven't had time to make any collages or edit photos necessary for said updates. I've been slowly beginning the massive additions to both of my shops, however, and these I'm excited to show you (one such post should occur in a day or so).

In the meantime, if you'll allow me to briefly get a bit personal, I've been struggling with a lot of stress in my social life, at my day job, and even with little things like cleaning my apartment. My future is uncertain and I feel like I am in limbo as my nearest and dearest have begun the next chapters of their lives. Not that I am not thankful for all that I have that I didn't a year ago, but it does feel like I should be winding down the "aimless 20-something" act...and I don't know how to.

This, my ever-increasing social anxiety (crying at friends' birthday parties because I don't want to interrupt anyone's conversation), the news that ANOTHER of my closest friends will be moving away from Chicago, has left me a bit of a wreck. Michael actually knew how hard everything has been for me the past few days and showed up at my work Saturday night with these:

With the news that my insurance will cover psychologist visits, I think this is something I will be needing to explore (and have been meaning to for years, honestly). I've barely begun the searching process so who knows when this will happen, but I'm determined to acquire this. Maybe it will give me some idea what I want to do with my future, or at least give me some pause and peace until I can arrive there.

Again, forgive me for being so personal on a supposed fashion blog. I just feel this is more relevant to my life at the moment than anything else. Soon I'll have more fun entries, promise.

Sunday, as you know already, was my two year anniversary with Michael. I got dressed nice and comfortable for an afternoon I knew would be full of eating and walking. Shifts are the best at hiding full tummies!

I met Michael at the the blue line where we went to have brunch at...

...the Blue Line Club Car! I've always seen this place but never went in. They have an awesome, affordable menu ($3 mimosas for brunch, too!) and the inside looks like a 50s bar. I'll definitely be going back; they have turkey AND black bean burgers. We also had excellent weather and scenery for eating outside (the train overhead didn't even bother us all that often).

After we ate we walked around Renegade for a while until Michael got too hot/tired. We got some frozen yoghurt and then popped in Buffalo Exchange. We parted ways until we met for dinner. We got sushi at Bob San, stopped to take the photobooth strip below, and had drinks at Violet Hour (our place...Michael says if he proposes to me it will likely be there).

Happy Anniversary

Two years ago Michael flew out to Chicago for the first time, and we've been crazy about each other ever since. We saw each other once a month, once every two months a few times, until he moved here a month and a half ago. We have talked every day since early August of 2008. I love him more than anyone else, I have never been so happy with anyone else, and I've never been so loved by anyone else. Sometimes we snap at each other and sometimes we act weird (who doesn't?) but I know in the end he will always be there. I love you, Michael, and here's to many more anniversaries!

Blogger (Re-) Meet Up and Other Weekend Adventures

Saturday afternoon Michael and I had the pleasure of having brunch with Rachel of MouseVox Vintage, her boyfriend, and some of their friends at Longman and Eagle. It was a nice leisurely meal full of hearty food and drinks as well as great conversation. It was a joy to see Rachel again, I get along with her very well. She's so sweet and I love that I can talk shop with someone! Unfortunately last time she visited Chicago I was unable to get a photograph of us together, but this time I did!

Afterward Michael and I goofed around with my cat, Seymour. Here are some pictures Michael took (the last is Seymour in front of a drawing I did of him on our chalkboard wall).

I'm hammier than usual today and I'm not sure why. It might be because I bought this dress in April but could only first wear it today. It was this long tunic with open panels and yesterday I learned how to use a sewing machine and sewed them shut. I also hemmed my first dress! It's awesome, I'm addicted now. They turned out pretty well, I must say. I think I'm a natural.

Or maybe I'm hammy because these are my last outfit photos with long hair. I hope tomorrow night I am not looking at them sadly and nostalgically...but my hair is driving me nuts lately so I might as well cut it now, right? It'll grow back, that's what everyone keeps telling me. I'll keep you all posted...

The Long and Short Of It

I love my love hair. I really, really do. But, all of a sudden, I feel the need to change my hair. I've always been jealous of girls who can rock the angled bob, my hair isn't sleek enough, unfortunately. But then I think, I've always said when I cut my hair in the (far off, I thought) future I'd go for an asymmetrical bob. I know what you are thinking, and no it wouldn't be as vulgar as that may sound. Taking a cue from fellow redheads I'm thinking something more like...

Pros:

• A hairstyle like this may classify as "edgy" which would be a refreshing contrast from my borderline twee clothing (let's not kid ourselves here, folks, I may swear like a sailor and drink like one too, but I dress like a cupcake)
• I am in my mid-20s and I don't know how much longer I can rock an "edgy" hairstyle without looking super weird
• Change is the essence of life, n'est pas?
• Short hair is (questionably) easier to take care of
• Would round out my somewhat angular facial features
• I can show off my neckline better (and make my neck look longer? Is this true?)

Cons:

• I won't have long, romantic hair anymore
• Limited hair style options
• Would have to get it cut more often to maintain shape
• Would potentially look awful
• Might have to surrender the Bettie Bangs if they clash with the angled hair.

Just a quick post to apologize to my readers. I've been an awful blogger lately. Nearly a week with no update! I've been super exhausted, partly cos I'm sick and partly cos of work and partly cos of stress...and that ain't changin' any time soon. But once I get acclimated to my new lifestyle (Michael, my boyfriend who currently lives in Kansas) will be moving here in two days and in three days I become manager at my place of work (meaning more hours, money, and responsibility)...but despite it all I will still find time to post! I'll at least try to throw in some filler posts now and again. AND my room is starting to look less like my moving boxes exploded (two months later...) so maybe I'll take some photos of my new place.

In the meantime, so you can hate me a little less, here's a(n oldish) picture of my cat being cute:

Impromptu

So, last week I was having a meltdown of sorts. I was so stressed out from work, my apartment, Chicago in general and I was losing my mind. I had Saturday, Sunday and Monday off, and my boyfriend had a free roundtrip Southwest flight saved up, and so off I went to Lawrence! My last visit there, a mere two weeks before Michael moves here! I was so happy. I got to get out of town, see the love of my life, and just hang out.

Saturday we strolled down Mass Street, and I practically bolted to the Antique Mall. I felt kinda bad because Michael was there last week, but he still pored over things. I'm so lucky to have a man so entranced my the past as I am. He loves looking for barware, typewriters, ties, and tie tacks, so that kept him busy.

I wanted this clock so badly:

I found a couple of dresses for me (one might work its way into the shop soon) and a few other things for the shop. We hit a few more shops, got Mexican food, and then went to the Salvation Army (his idea!). It was great, they had all the vintage stuff separated from the rest and it didn't cost any more. That night we went for drinks with his friends and Sunday we went to the lake. Oh man the humidity the entire time was awful. I felt like I was walking through the rainforest. Seriously, I was a sticky bun. Anyway we went out for dinner and saw Inception, which we both liked! Leonardo DiCaprio loves playing characters with insane wives.

Do What I Say: Heat-Busting Edition

Ah, we are finally in the thick of summer here in Chicago. I love the heat! Can't complain (other than about the humidity) but you do need to keep cool, especially when you are in the sun for long periods of time. Hopefully you can find some of my tried and true wisdom helpful!

• Drink A Lot Of Water - This should go unsaid, but many forget! Rule of thumb for how much you should drink a day, take your weight in numbers, divide by 2 and that's how many ounces you should drink a day, plus x2 however many ounces of coffee or soda you drink.

• Wear All-Natural Fibers - Sure that rayon dress FEELS like cotton, and that polyester shirt SEEMS airy, but synthetic fibers do not breathe. Stick (or un-stick, rather) to cotton, silk, and linen.

• Protect Your Hair Colour - Dyed hair needs sunscreen, too, especially if you have a bright colour like red (trust me, I know). Get a UV protective spray, like L'oreal's Ever Pure UV Spray, or get a hairspray with UV blockers like John Frieda's Anti-Frizz Hairspray.

• Take A Powder - Body powder, that is! As you get dressed after moisturizing, sunscreen-ing, and deodorizing seal it in and smooth yourself with baby powder or any corn starch-based powder. My fave is Silky Underwear by Lush; it smells heavenly of jasmine and has cocoa butter in it so I can ditch the lotion most days.

• Prime - If you wear makeup, especially liquid or cream makeup, make sure you put a primer down before you apply it. It will keep your makeup on your skin longer and will keep the makeup from clogging your pores. You should do this year round, but on hot days I notice my makeup breaks down faster in hot weather.

• Corn Starch Is a Miracle - If your hair is too frizzy to wash every day when the temperature and humidity rise just work some corn starch into your scalp. It's the active ingredient in most dry shampoos and only costs pennies. The only caveat is that you MUST work it in well or you will look like a judge of yore. Another great use for corn starch? Rub some on your bare feet before putting your shoes on- it will help wick the moisture, preventing discomfort and blisters. Seriously, for pretty much $1 for a decent sized can this is epically useful and will last a long time. I keep it in the bathroom.

• Carry Baby Wipes - This one I got from my friend Alma. On days you are really sweating, keep these in your bag for a quick touch-up throughout the day. It will cool you down; rub on back of your neck, knees, arms, underarms. If your deodorant isn't doing its job anymore use one of these to wipe it off and reapply; deodorant sticks best to clean, dry, recent shaved skin.

Here's what I wore on my birthday day (Sunday). I was worried it was going to thunderstorm but it just rained a little while we were still in bed. I thought it was a little cooler than it was so I opted to wear this cute dress I got as a gift from my dad. The fabric is pretty airy, to my delight, so I wasn't too hot after all.

First Michael and I went to Yolk for a decadent breakfast. We were so stuffed, I don't think I've ever not felt like bursting after eating there. We poked around Paper Source afterwards since it was a block away and Michael bought himself a birthday present; a book for keeping track of music lists (songs to make out to, songs you want played at your funeral, etc). Then we headed to the Lincoln Park Zoo.

We saw pretty much everything there, and that zoo is great because it's free. I don't wanna recap each animal I saw and what they did so I'm just going to post a million photos. Look at how cute that baby panther in a box is! Omg.

Birthday Party Dress

Saturday night Michael and I celebrated our birthdays at a bar here called The Whistler. It's one of my favourites. It's lounge-y and low-key that's also standing-room, and they keep it at low capacity so it doesn't get overcrowded. They make special seasonal cocktails, classic cocktails, stand-bys, and have a great beer selection. Be sure to stop by if you are in Chicago.

Anyway, I only took snaps of Michael and I before we left, but I wanted to show off my outfit. And Michael looks great as always-perfectly matching the duck tie I gave him as part of his present!

How long has it been since my last outfit post? A month? Wow! Here's my new photo wall. The paint colour is "fashion grey" and I love it! And the light in this apartment is insane since we are on the third floor. I didn't have to edit these photos at all! No more using bad light as an excuse for no photos hopefully. My apartment is still a mess so I had to shift some boxes and crap out of the way to take these, but soon enough it will be alright. This will also be the wall I'm gonna shoot my Etsy photos against.

I know my hair is totally 80s stockbroker with a touch of duck tail, but it's hot and I'm getting a haircut later so I just swept it all back. I felt really glamourous earlier but now I'm not sure if I can rock the no-fringe look. Thoughts?

Good (Shop) News, Everyone!

Now that I have the internet back I can finally share all my good shop news with you! Firstly, I have at long last added my new headbands to Branchbound! Take a look:

Madelief was sold to no other than Karen of Small Earth Vintage! I'm so excited to see pictures of her in it! Not to worry, though, I plan to make some similar styles of headbands with those circles. Any colours you'd like to see? Also, the Adeil headband is made of white lace I have a lot of so I can dye it almost any colour. It's perfectly customizable!

I have also reached 100 sales in my vintage shop! This calls for a celebration...stay tuned! ;)

And, last but certainly not least, I have some great news...

Slubird Vintage will be selling at Vintage Heaven in Chicago on July 3rd!

Vintage Heaven is an event where different vintage vendors set up shop in a gallery space in Wicker Park. I know a few people who have done it and loved it, and the people who run it are super nice. Hello Brooklyn

Somehow this is the only photo from May 22, the second day of my trip. I guess we were just so busy I never thought to take some snaps! This was taken of my outfit at the Brooklyn flea on a beautiful day. Before this me and a big group of us girls went to General Greene for brunch. The flea wasn't as impressive as I had hoped; almost all of the vintage I saw in New York was tremendously disappointing. Very expensive for how poor of quality the garments were! I did see some great vintage jewelry at the flea, however, and some of my friends found things. Outside of the fleagrounds there were a lot of people having stoop sales, and I found this awesome 60s metal belt! Everyone convinced me to get it, so I did, but since I have no pictures you will have to wait until I incorporate it into an outfit photo! We also went to Artists & Fleas...same thing. Crummy vintage clothing but some AWESOME handmade goodies. I didn't buy anything but I loved to look.

That night we had dinner at an Italian restaurant on the Lower East Side called Max. The food was fine but that was the worst service I have ever had. We didn't leave a tip it was so bad! I wouldn't recommend it. We finished the night with dancing at Lit (there was one really, really awesome dj and one bad one, and they kept switching off, but at least there was one good dj). Afterwards we wandered around for a while, at this point just me, Kara, Erin and Erika, had a snack at Dunkin Donuts while we talked about the various animal encounters Erika might be having in Mongolia. We got home as the sun was coming up.

The next day I met up with my friend Jordan for brunch and then off to the Brooklyn botanical gardens we went!

I love how people humour me enough to snap outfit pictures for me/you guys. ;)

It was a nice overcast, warm day and we just wandered through all the different gardens. There were a lot of new breeds of flowers and some had some totally redic names (and there were multiple ones named Betty White and other cliche names like Prom Date).

I really enjoyed the hot houses (though of course my hair poofed up likea scared cat's tail) and the ponds with the lily pads and sleepy koi fish.

It was good to spend a little time with Jordan since I hadn't seen him since I visited Savannah two years ago. And I think you all know how much I enjoy plants!

It's a Helluva Town

Alright, I'm finally starting my NYC weekend recap! Now I just have to remember what I did. I gotta warn, y'all, this is pretty picture-heavy.

My friends Erin, Kara and I came in at 9a, so tired, so we went our separate ways and Kara and I went to our friend Dani's place (who we were staying with) and hella napped.

Then we met Erin and her sister Shannon at a little French bakery near the met. Kind of expensive for the tiny portions, but it was good. And of course we got goodies from the sweets case on our way out...

We get to the Met, and the first thing I want to do is check out the Costume wing. But it's closed! BUT it's closed because they had an amazing special exhibit; "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity." You can see the details on the website here. It was one of the best exhibits I've ever seen. Perfectly preserved clothing from the 1880s to the 1930s. I was in heaven! I could look at the gorgeous detailed beading on Victorian party gowns and flapper dresses, dreamily covet all the sailor suits and cotton blouses of the '10s, and stare at a case of Bohemian silk shoes! Even just being around everything made of natural fibers...it was so great, I'm becoming a big fabric snob. It's running until August 15, so if you find yourself in New York at all between now and then you HAVE TO SEE THIS. One of the most interesting parts, for me, was learning about Suffragette fashion. It's usually passed over in the history of fashion, so it was the subject I learned the most about at this exhibit. There was a quote I'll add as soon as I find it (scribbled it down, it's in the bowels of my apartment somewhere right now) about how they wore the current fashions and how it helped with their stand because they were showing women deserved the right to vote because of, not in spite of, their status as a object of desire. I found that profoundly interesting, it was validation for the debate I often hear of women who wear vintage fashions today not being feminists because they are idealizing a time where feminism was rampant, when in fact we are just as feminist as any other. I, and many women I know, dress in feminine attire FOR OURSELVES. We like the way we look in these clothes, we respect our bodies enough to wear flattering clothing. It's great my boyfriend likes when I don a vintage hat and dress, but I do it for me. That's as feminist as it gets!

Anyway, sorry for the tangent/rant. Rantgent. Before we left the Met we also checked out the Art of Illumination exhibit, where they completely dismantled an amazingly illustrated book of hours made in the early 1400s. I loved the saints stories especially. Something you might not know about me is that I love patron saints and their stories. My favourite is St Lucia. I did write a little thing on this blog for her feast day back in December but many of you might not have been reading this blog then! They also included zodiac symbols on the calendar pages, which I also found neat since it's a Catholic book. I'm also a huge astrology nerd!

We checked out the armor and the instruments, too, and then headed to the rooftop garden! It was about 7 pm, still lots of light but it was starting to set. We took a lot of pictures, of course:

Later we went for dinner at Zarela, an excellent Mexican restaurant. They had really strong yet tasty margaritas (I got pomegranate!), the best fresh salsa I've ever had tableside, and the 5 of us split 6 entrees and sides. Highly recommended! We then headed over to Flatiron Lounge, which I also highly recommend. I think my drink was called Maxwell's Return, I can't remember what was in it but it was amazing. If I go back some time I'm gonna get what Kara had; it had peach and jasmine in it! I also finally met long-time internet friend (from Livejournal days, if you can imagine!) Stephanie, of the Girl Friday blog. We had a long, awesome conversation about travel and men and life. Unfortunately we were gabbing so much I didn't get a picture of us together. In fact, I only have one picture of the night (of me, Erin, Kara and Dani):

Summer finally hit Chicago and the footwear fiend that I am is seeking out sandals. I've been looking at so many different kinds of styles this year, more adventurous than my usual tastes! I find myself drawn to cutout shapes, vintage-inspired styles, t-straps, feminine details, and colours beyond my standard gold for summer.

Remembering Roxanne

Pardon my being incredibly personal today (especially with my absence as of late), but today is one that does not fail to lead me into deep introspection. Today is the tenth anniversary of my mother's death. Even though I was still a child when she passed, many memories of her still stick with me stronger than many others and not a day goes by where I don't think about her.

She taught me many things, and why not, she was a high school English teacher after all. I remember her little tips for remembering spelling and grammar, the advice she gave me about boys, the do's and don'ts of colour-matching, the joys of giving people little presents any time, and so much more. And even while I still like to mix navy and black (sorry, mom!) I can still her her saying them in my head as if it was last week.

My mother was crafty, which is where I got that trait from I am certain. I used to watch her in her study making her miniature rooms (which were amazing, and on display at her wake) or letter-writing or painting. I loved her dedication to even the smallest things, like the calligraphy she would write letters in as Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy in response to mine.

She even took what might be my first Wardrobe Remix photo:

I don't know if I will ever have children, but I am positive that I will be a very similar mother to my children as she was to me and my brother. I have honoured her memory in many ways already, including various projects in my undergrad career (in particular a self-portrait project based on her lifelong collection of journals entitled A Portrait As Roxanne). Even though my time spent with her was short in the grand scheme of things, and I am deeply saddened not to be friends with her as an adult, I know she would be incredibly proud of all I have accomplished thus far and I am happy I got 13 wonderful years with her.

I love you and miss you, mom.

I just realized this is the debut of my vintage eyeglasses! They are cat eye, from the 50s. I love them so much! And I got really really nice lenses for them so I want to wear them all the time. Please forgive my gross sleepy face, though. I'm still getting 5 hours of sleep a night. Too much to do!

I wanted to be comfy so I wore this grey sack dress. Since it's so billowy and short it begs for colourful accessories, as you can tell by how often I wear this thing. Little black dress? Pfft. Little GREY dress. I like the way the red goes with the tights from We Love Colors, I was worried I'd look too superhero or something. But I think just the little touch of red is just the thing, and the tights make the dress look really mod.

I also really love my new ring from LuShae Jewelry. I've been wearing this every day since I got it. I was worried the stones might get damaged from all the work I do with my hands but this thing looks like it just came out of the box! This is my favourite kind of ring; unique with a bit of bling but still nice and flat. They have a bunch of other things I really liked, too, and even my brother liked this ring!

In other news, my apartment is coming along. We started painting last night (don't worry, I changed out of my cute outfit first!). Here's a crappy cell phone pic of my new bedroom colour:

For all I know, this might be my last "proper" outfit photo before I move (though I'm going to try and take some in New York City next weekend while I'm there. Oh yes, I'll be in New York City next weekend! I have limited time and I have an idea of my plans already, but if there's anything I Must. Not. Miss. then by all means let me know!)

But back to this outfit. I originally bought this skirt for the shop but since it fit me perfectly I decided to keep it. Because I have virtually NO patterns in my wardrobe. I'm really trying to wear more patterns and learn to pattern mix. See, this is what I did with the polka dots! How did I do?

I warned you guys I was gonna be super out of it, but I'm trying! This outfit is from yesterday. Today I looked much frumpier cos I was tired and it was a lot colder! I really, really hate Chicago weather. Whenever it's nice temperature-wise it's either raining or windy or both. Grumble grumble grumble.

I'm still not sure how I feel about these shoes. I think it's the woven stuff on the tops in the front. I feel like nothing really matches them, I guess. Same with this skirt. This is only the second time I've worn it (winter is partly to blame). I think it's cos I need to iron/steam the heck out of it when I wear it. Classy yet low-maintenance...there's gotta be a niche for me somewhere in fashion without me only wearing jersey dresses. Sorry for the rant. I'm exhausted and today has been kind of a bummer. Still waiting to hear anything about our dream apartment. I move in three weeks! Come on, guys...

Art for Art's Sake

I just bought these two lovely pieces from Matou en Peluche and I am so excited to get them! I work at a frame shop, too, so when they come I'm framing them up real nice. I've been wanting them for months now so I know that they will make me happy every time I look at them.

As I mentioned previously, I'm moving into a new apartment at the end of the month. The fun part? Buying new stuff! If I get the apartment my roommate and I are aiming for I'll have a lot more room for cute decor. So, friends, tell me: What are your favourite artists on Etsy? Between seeing my friend Erika before she moves to Mongolia for two years, looking for a new apartment, and planning my trip to New York City the weekend before I move, I gotta say I'm a bit stretched thin! Exciting things on the horizon, though, so I'm loving that.

Returning from Larryville

If you were wondering where I was the past week or so, I was in Lawrence, Kansas visiting my boyfriend. It was a much needed vacation from my oft-stressful life in Chicago and it was nice, as always, to spend time with Michael. The weather there was lovely in the 60s and 70s the entirety of the trip. So nice to enjoy soft wind, plenty of sun, and bare limbs.

I was particularly naughty this trip and bought a lot of things. None of which were particularly expensive, thankfully, but it was still a trial getting my suitcase shut yesterday! Friday, my first full day, we hit Mass Street, the main drag. First we went to the Antique Mall, one of my fave places where we can both wander for hours (and always do). I got the prettiest silvery gray straw hat with fake leaves and flowers that fits my head perfectly, a variety of golden buttons for a project, and a cute cotton 50s dress for the shop. We then hit up Wild Man Vintage, which is really affordable and I've gotten a sailor dress I love there last summer. The boy got a couple of shirts and a pair of 50s khakis that fit him wonderfully and were in amazing condition. I (finally) got a 50s ivory cardigan with white wheat beadwork and a floral cotton shift dress. I went back the next day to get a pair of red cork wedge sandals I was eyeing. We ended the evening with Mexican food, bowling, and drinking at a couple of local bars.

Saturday Michael and I got breakfast at Mirth. We sat outside and it was delicious food. Since this was also on Mass St we decided to continue our sauntering from the day before (we had to stop as it got chilly and we were starving). That's when I bought the aforementioned shoes and another hat at another antique shop we'd never been in. It's a lovely dusty rose colour that matches my hair with a little feather in the front! I'm so lucky I can find these hats on my trips, since I don't like buying hats online and I can never find the kind I like in Chicago.

We got some ice cream and walked to the park, where we watched animals and high school kids take their prom pictures. That night his friends BBQed for us and we chatted and watched tv/played Wii Golf. I love Wii Golf; I really want a Wii but can't justify buying one so in the meantime will just have to mooch! Michael also got this great drawing of him done by his friend Ramon:

He did one of me, too, but I wasn't able to pick it up before I left. I can't wait to get it! Sunday we just hung out, ate more Mexican food, and I watched the first two episodes of Twin Peaks! Yes, I've been under a rock and I had never seen it before. It's too early for me to have a solid opinion on it, but I enjoyed what I've watched so far.

Monday we went to Kansas City! It was really warm so I donned my new hat and dress:

Getting up was kind of a pain in the ass, as Google gave us the wrong names for the exits, but we got there eventually. We went to a few vintage shops in Westport, but the only one of note was Donna's Dress Shop. It was perfect, I wish I could live there! I got a pair of 70s denim shorts that look like pin-up shorts and fit like a dream. Our last stop was in the downtown area; we visited the giant Antique Mall there. It's 4 stories! Michael got a mustard shirt and I *finally* got a mirrored vanity tray. I...haven't unpacked it yet, but they wrapped it well so I will assume it's still intact. I almost bought this PERFECT black straw boater hat with an "under bow" but it was $22.50...and I could not fathom spending more than $20 on a hat. Though I kind of wish I did. Dang.

Yesterday was more hanging out at Michael's place until I had to leave. I was so sad to go; this was my last visit to Lawrence! Michael moves here in a few short months finally. Still, saying goodbye to his apartment was hard, so many memories there. But I had some pretty dresses and a cute cat waiting for me when I got home, which softens to the blow.

Phew! What a long entry. What have I missed? How was your weekend?

Oh moppets, I'm so horrible at posting where I update my shop! My store is at 75 items now, and I still have a decent pile of things to photograph and list when I get back (going to Lawrence tonight to be with my love).
