Dracula's Pajama Party

Yipee, my Halloween post is only a day late! Forgive the quality of these pictures but they were taken at my Halloween party held Saturday night. I went as a Snow Queen, but a lot of people thought I was Tilda Swinton/the White Witch. Same thing, I suppose. I based the dress off of a Cecil Beaton photograph of his sister as a shooting star (my original idea) and styled it very John R. O'Neil a la Wizard Of Oz (see my jaunty crown?).







There is still some glitter in my hair and the whole costume left glitter all over my apartment. I expect my life to sparkle for the next few months.

Costumes I did not get photos of include AstroTurf, a cat lady, George Michael (from Arrested Development), and Death (from The Sandman). Highlights included starting a conga line to "Jumping The Line," watching Sleepy Hollow and The Shining on mute, all of us turning The Shining off mute at the end to watch it, lots of hugging and dancing and punch consumption. I gotta say, dancing with that staff was pretty sweet.

Daddy's Little Girl

Happy Father's Day, daddy! I love you so much, and you are more than just the best dad I could ask for. You're also one of my closest friends. Thanks for always being there not just for me but also for others who are close to me and Ben. Your warmth and compassion has spread beyond your children, which is admirable and amazing. Thanks for all the little things you do that mean the world to me, like letting me tag along to shows, driving me up to Chicago when I was an angsty suburban kid, making me dinner and letting me take the leftovers when I go home, burning me music, dancing with me at weddings...the list goes on and on because you are that awesome.

New Year, New Post

Sorry for the length delay, everyone. I was in Lawrence visiting my man from the 30th to the 3rd, so I wasn't able to post until today. I have three outfit pictures! First is from New Year's Eve:

These look a little janky cos of the flash and these were taken at the end of the evening so I wasn't very fresh. We didn't have time to snap a pic before because we were still cooking! Michael made penne with vodka sauce, and I made a salad, sauteed green beans and mushrooms in butter and dill, bruschetta, and a caramel pecan pie. Mmm.

I was at Target in Lawrence and they had the blue eyelet Rodarte dress I was eyeing! I was forlorn- I shouldn't buy two $40 dresses right? But I tried it on, anyway...luckily it didn't look as good as this one did. If it goes on sale (not holding my breath) I may pick it up. At least I know my size already.

I wore this outfit Saturday, and Friday I actually wore the same dress but in the other colour. Yes, I bought both. I looove this dress, it's perfect. H&M has actually been really on point with their shirt dresses, there is another I saw the other day that I may have to return for. Also with this outfit I am wearing a gorgeous pair of wire and paper earrings made by my friend Erin at Never Contented Things - no store yet but soon! They are so delicate yet strong, and I love having the white leaves against my red hair.

I got this dress Saturday at Arizona Trading Company (I think it's the same as Crossroads) in Lawrence for a song and couldn't resist wearing it Sunday. It has pockets, too! Wowowow. I love the colour and the plaid and the Peter Pan collar...I could go on and on. It reminds me of this dress from Whitney, but the winterized version.

Overall the trip was good, as is every time I see my boyfriend. Lawrence is nice to visit cos it's a college town- all the amenities of the suburbs (Super Target, getting a ride everywhere, fast food row) and also that of a college town (quirky shops, vegetarian cuisine). Half the trip was spend cuddling inside and watching MST3K and Simpsons and the other half was shopping (mostly for party things), dining out, and seeing Up In The Air (highly recommended). Resolutions and Goals for 2010

• Get up 15 minutes earlier every day (outfit photo + get together lunch + not have to run to the bus)
• Take outfit photos way more often (see previous)
• Update blog at least every other day
• Get a lot more stock for both my etsy stores
• Save money so I can go to L.A. in March and Boston/Salem in September or October with Michael
• Make solid, fashionable attempt to wear pants more often
• Only buy shoes that are durable, comfortable, and stylish
• Get rid of even more stuff
• Buy a better sewing machine and learn how to sew (this is not likely, but I'm still putting it on here)

I think that's it! What are your goals/resolutions, if you haven't blogged about it already? I'm hoping 2010 will be a great year!

Another attempt at having multiple pictures. I'm not too pleased with the far away shots- blurry because of the snow! It has just started snowing at that point and we have gotten a lot since then. My brother just came in from shoveling, and we are about to brave the three-ring circus of Target in the hopes that I might procure myself a certain Rodarte dress (I am not holding my breath). However, I am very pleased with my presents so far. I have received a Rodarte shirt and a Scarlett O'Hara glass from my friend Alma, and my friend Erin made me some absolutely gorgeous paper jewelry (earrings, and a bracelet I wore on Christmas Eve). My dad and grandma have spoiled me immensely, too, and I get the feeling my boyfriend also has. I'm a lucky lady! But considering almost all of the gifts my friends and family have received by me have been loved and put to use makes me feel pretty marvelous, too.

Anyway! The outfit. I wish I got a picture of my Christmas Eve outfit, but the day was a bit nanners. If I can't find the dress I want, and I return the dress I bought last month for NYE, I may repeat the outfit. But this dress was originally from Target, and still new I think, but I thrifted it. Gotta love that. I also treated myself to the patterned tights last week- all of mine have massive holes in them! I swear they rip faster than any other kind. And the boots I have worn before, as I have the headband (a birthday gift to myself last year). My aunt said I looked like a snowflake, haha.

I may or may not do a gifty-post, so if that doesn't happen I want to say now that I hope you got everything you wanted, and I want to see everything! I hope everyone who celebrated Christmas had a very merry one, with family, friends, food, and a lot of happiness.

I first saw Designer Playground on Etsy's front page, showcasing their fox stole t-shirts. While I loved those too, I was really attracted to these zipper brooches. They also come in a variety of colours and a few different styles. They also make bracelets, necklaces, headbands, and hairbands with the zippers, too.




Personalized Vintage Bookplates by Oiseaux

I used to have bookplates as a wee one, but I haven't seen them in ages. I love the ones on this site, and I think this one is my favourite. Is it because it's white and teal? Birds and a tree? It has my name on it already? Who knows. But I would totally adhere this to my absolute favourite books I'll never get rid of ever, and you should, too.




Charity Cat by Two Stray Cats

I saw these little cuties in this love-themed treasury yesterday by The House of Hearts and I wished I had seen them earlier! I would have gotten some for a few different people. They're darling and the best part is the profits go towards animals in need! Definitely keeping these on my list...

I also had a few vintage items on my list, but they have been purchased. Exciting! I wonder if they will find their way under my tree...? What etsy items were on your wishlist? What did you get your loved ones from etsy? I always love hearing about new shops.

Day After Black Friday

I hope everyone out there survived Black Friday. I, for one, was at work from 9a to 8p (yuck) but I survived intact. I've never been one to care about Black Friday. I have don't recall checking the sales fliers in anticipation as I have had no need for doorbusters. I know a few vintage sellers on etsy went thrifting yesterday and scored big; unfortunately since I worked I missed a lot of sales at the thrifts as well. I did get a fair haul in my hometown on Wednesday, however, and those and the hats I re-shot will make their way over to the shop Monday hopefully. And just a reminder, through Monday at Slubird Vintage a sale is going on: 10% off one item, 15% off two items, and 20% off three or more items.

Things I Love Thursday - 10.08.09

It's a day late, though I did write most of it last night before I passed out. But better late than never, right? And there's lots of pretty pictures.

• nude pink - As I was getting rid of a few shirts and sweaters in the spring, I noticed that pretty much everything I was discarding was pink. I thought, well, I'm just not a pink sort of girl and let it rest. But lately seeing pale, nude pinks popping about, and even really desaturated dusty pinks, makes me want to don the designated colour of my gender (though, true fact, blue was originally a girl colour and pink was a boy's!). All of the below is from Urban Outfitters:





• Halloween costumes - I'm so excited for Halloween every year. Once September ends I am starting to make plans, hoping someone I know is having a house party (so much more fun than a bar, and a lot fewer sexy Dorothys that way), and deciding on an outfit. I love having an idea I'm really excited about, searching for all the pieces to put it together, and doing all the crafty sewing/painting/altering/building for it. Having a store bought costume is no fun! Here are my costumes this year:

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

• Single Stone Studios on etsy - This list might as well be "stuff I've favourited on etsy this week." I mean, the place is becoming my security blanket. Anywho, these guys have AMAZING vinyl wall decals, mostly but not limited to trees of various sizes and species, birds, chandeliers, and abstract shapes such as swirls and argyle. I have always wanted tree wallpaper, but I think that when I finally have my own place I'm going to get different vinyl trees for each room. Check out how dreamy the winter birches look:



• Faux Pas to Fabulous - This blog feature on ModCloth is such a great idea. It's one thing to cringe at some very ugly outfits celebrities decide to don, but it's way more awesome to find the core of why they made that outfit decision and show where they took a wrong turn. Fashion psychology anyone? Read it here.

• wool capes - Maybe it's the fall weather making a bit witchy, or the Victorian novel I'm reading, but I have been scouring racks for a perfect wool cape. It's not functional for everyday wear, so it would need to fall in the price range of "novelty item" in my budget, but it would be so warm and classy over a cocktail dress with a clutch in my hand as I'm going out in the evening. I can't decide whether I like the classic look of a vintage cape or the stylistic shaping of a modern cape:
